Comp 140 - Lab 1 - FAQ

Laboratory Assignment 1

  1. Is this lab worth any marks?
Yes, check your marks page for the lab assignment weightings.
  2. Can I access my H: drive from home?
No, not at this time. WinSCP will allow you to connect to your deepblue student account.
  3. I missed attending this lab. Do I need to make it up?
Yes. I recommend attending this lab so you are able to confirm your deepblue account credentials. Come and talk to me if you missed this lab.
  4. Can I do this lab at home?
Yes, if you have a MS Windows-based computer. You won't have access to your Camosun H: drive from home so substitute H:\ with some other local folder instead.
  5. What do I need to know before doing this lab?
You need to send me an email (langs at camosun dot ca)so I can reply with your deepblue student account number.
  6. What should I have learned from completing this lab?
HTML is used to structure web pages into content such as paragraphs, images, hyperlinks, and lists. You should know the difference between a relative and an absolute URL. You should be able to use an SSH client such as WinSCP to facilitate file and folder transfers between the local computer and a remote host.
  7. Do I need to write the web pages in HTML or XHTML?
    Use HTML.
  8. How do send in the answers to the short answer questions at the end of the lab?
Use a text editor to write out the answers in point form. Most questions require only a few words as answers. Email me the text in the message body or as a text file attachment. Do not email me a non-text attachment as it will be flagged as spam by the filters and I won't receive it. If you have an unusual email address (for example M133T_DUDE@coolworks.net), please include your first and last name somewhere in the body of the email so I can tell who the message is from, thanks!
  9. I would like to learn more about HTML. Where do I start?
Go to the official w3c.org web site and view the latest HTML specification documentation.
  10. I would like to learn more about WinSCP. Where do I start?
Go to the official WinSCP.net site and view the latest documentation. There is a prepared information PDF summary on the course site.
